Myster DL –The American Swiss Knife

PlayasOnly.Com: Introduce yourself, your back-story and the career of Myster DL.

Myster DL: “I’m an MC, producer, engineer, video director/editor, DJ, booking agent, website designer, graphic artist, CEO and more.  I make music about real-life things, the weed game, the current state of Hip-Hop, love, death and everything in between.”

PlayasOnly.Com: How long have you been in the game?

Myster DL: “I’ve been interested in music since 1993.  I started by ruining records on an old family turntable, then I moved on to making beats using tape decks and a pause button.  I took making music seriously after buying and hearing the BACDAFUCUP album by Onyx.”

PlayasOnly.Com: Where are you from?

Myster DL: “I was born in Dayton OH, raised the 1st year and a half of my life in Michigan, then moved out to Plattsburgh, NY.  I spent my Junior High/High School days in Dracut MA, moved to the Boston area for a year, and then I moved to Liberty City in NW Miami.  I also lived in Humboldt County, CA and 3 years ago I moved back to Lowell, MA.”

PlayasOnly.Com: We can see that you’ve worked with many artists…  Tell us your most shining moment?

Myster DL: “Doing a song with B-Real of Cypress Hill, Sticky Fingaz of Onyx and Rockness Monstah of Heltah Skeltah; Not to mention Kool G Rap all on the same song.  Onyx, Cypress Hill and Busta Rhymes were my biggest inspiration and they felt I was dope enough to do a song with; No paid features…  Great feeling!  Other memorable moments include performing for over 50,000 people on 3 separate occasions and the day I released my 1st album (2/14/06).”

PlayasOnly.Com: You have had many different positions in the music industry, from musician to producer.  Tell us what fits you the best.

Myster DL: “I think I’m a great writer.  I write real things that stoners and hustlers can relate to.  If you don’t relate, you’re not supposed to because it’s not for you.  I also took the New England music video scene by storm, dropping 50 videos in just 1 year gaining millions of views from both major and underground artists combined.”

PlayasOnly.Com: Which other artists do you affiliate with?

Myster DL: “Heltah Skeltah, Onyx, B Real of Cypress Hill, Rampage of Flipmode Squad, and many others.”

PlayasOnly.Com: We can see that you have released an LP and 3 mixtapes.  Let us know a few of your hottest tracks and what brought them about.

Myster DL: “I am currently working on my 13th release.  Be on the lookout for songs like “Cruisin’,” “Planet of the Grapes,” “Turn Me Up,” “I’m a Dankster” and an as-yet untitled track ft. Onyx Produced by Statik Selektah. “

PlayasOnly.Com: How were you first discovered?  If it was from a track, which track?

Myster DL: “The 1st two big songs I had were “How We Roll” and “Let It Fall,” which are still played on the radio 6-7 years later.  I wasn’t discovered; I did this all alone.”

PlayasOnly.Com: What other projects have you worked on?

Myster DL: “I have worked on more than 100 albums, 60+ videos and 1 Lions Gate movie.”

PlayasOnly.Com: Can you tell us about some experiences you have had with other artists that you will always remember?

Myster DL: “Cypress Hill cross joint smoke session, Onyx bringing me onstage to destroy crowds and sitting in jail for 2 days trying to film Rockness Monstah’s video.”

PlayasOnly.Com: What or who inspired you to start making music?

Myster DL: “Onyx, hands down.”

 

PlayasOnly.Com: What are some highlighted moments in your career so far?

Myster DL: “People telling me my music gets them through their day and people telling me they learned something from my music.”

PlayasOnly.Com: What shows have you done in your career that stands out?

Myster DL: “Reggae on the River, Boston Freedom Rally and the Black Rock Tour.”

PlayasOnly.Com: Any other plans for the future?

Myster DL: “To dominate, to keep it real and keep it dankster.”

Myster DL: “I do everything! I write, produce, rhyme, DJ, engineer, make websites, do graphic design, I’m a director, editor, cameraman, booking agent, promoter and more… I can do anything you need done.”
